September 2023 was packed with memorable moments. Joe Jonas filed for divorce from Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner. Taylor Swift showed up at Arrowhead Stadium for a Kansas City Chiefs game amid growing rumors of her relationship with Travis Kelce. U2 opened the Las Vegas Sphere in a spectacular concert event.
Now, I can’t speak about how Jonas and Turner are doing these days (though we can hope it’s for the better). Taylor and Travis have since announced their engagement. And for all we know, U2 might still be showing up on Apple devices uninvited.
But there’s one thing that hasn’t changed since the fall of 2023: Kentucky football’s home SEC losing streak.
It all began after the Wildcats’ dominant 33–14 win over Florida that September, when Ray Davis had the game of his life, racking up 280 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Since then? Kentucky has gone 0–8 in SEC home games.
The Slide: A Closer Look
To close out the 2023 season, Kentucky lost at home to Missouri, Tennessee, and Alabama. The 2024 campaign wasn’t any kinder. The Wildcats dropped home SEC games to South Carolina, Georgia (in gut-wrenching fashion), Vanderbilt, and Auburn. Toss in a non-conference loss to rival Louisville for good measure, and the frustration builds.
The streak carried into this season, with Kentucky falling to Ole Miss in their SEC home opener. Despite jumping out to a 10–0 lead, thanks to two interceptions by Ty Bryant but the Wildcats couldn’t hold on. Miscue after miscue led to another disappointing result at Kroger Field.
After the loss, head coach Mark Stoops tried to find the positives.
“The environment was great on Saturday,” Stoops said. “I loved the atmosphere and appreciate the fans and the support. It was really fun for the vast majority of that game. I wish we could finish it off. We’re a better football team. This team is working hard and playing very tough. Working to improve.”
Why It Matters
Whether fans want to admit it or not, this home SEC losing streak matters. Stoops built Kentucky’s football identity by consistently beating the teams they were supposed to beat especially at home. Kroger Field used to be a place where the Cats protected their turf. Lately, it’s been anything but.
Looking Ahead: The Road Doesn’t Get Easier
Unfortunately for Kentucky, relief might not be coming anytime soon. The next SEC home matchup isn’t until October 18th, when Texas comes to town. Sure, the Longhorns have had their struggles early in the season, but they remain one of the most talented teams in the country.
After Texas? Tennessee and Florida two teams with recent success over the Wildcats and no shortage of motivation to keep the streak alive.
At this point, some fans are starting to ask a tough question: Could this streak stretch into 2026?
