It’s officially official: Zach Calzada has been named Kentucky’s starting quarterback for the Wildcats’ week one matchup against Toledo. ESPN’s Pete Thamel was the first to report the news Monday morning, kicking off game week in Lexington.

This announcement doesn’t come as a major surprise to Big Blue Nation. From the moment Calzada transferred in, the expectation was that he would be Kentucky’s starter for his final year of eligibility.

Still, the decision wasn’t without some debate leading into the season. Kentucky’s own Cutter Boley turned heads last year, most notably in the Wildcats’ showdown against then No. 3 Texas. Coming in during the second half, Boley went 10-of-18 for 160 yards with one interception, showing poise and potential against one of the toughest defenses in college football. His strong offseason only added fuel to the idea that he might be ready to take over the offense sooner rather than later.

For now, though, head coach Mark Stoops is putting his trust in the veteran. Calzada’s experience and leadership will guide Kentucky into the 2025 season opener, while Boley waits in the wings as a promising future option.

Game week is here, and with Calzada under center, the Wildcats are ready to set the tone for what could be an exciting season in the Bluegrass.
